Useful Information
The Staff
Personalized service is assured at Karin's Camp. The staff can all communicate
in English and the Lodge manageress has a working knowledge of Italian
and German.
Rangers- our rangers are employed for their knowledge, love of the bush and ability to
communicate with people. They are highly trained and conversant with all aspects of ecology and
conservation.
Trackers- Our trackers are local North Sotho and Pedi men whose knowledge of the bush goes
beyond their formal training and can only be described as an intuitive understanding of the
bush and it's inhabitants.
Game Drives
Game drives are conducted in open 4-wheel drive safari vehicles in our private reserve. The 4 -
wheel drive safari vehicles enable the rangers to leave the road and provide guests with up
close viewing and fantastic photographic opportunities. Night drives, with the aid of powerful
spotlights bring to life the bush and expose some of Africa's more secretive nocturnal animals.
Game Walks
Guests may choose a game walk to a game drive, we encourage all our guests to experience this
option as it brings one into an even closer contact with nature.
The client can decide on the length and duration of the game walk, anything from a strenuous 3-
hour hike to a more leisurely 30-minute stroll, perhaps in conjunction with a game drive can be
organized.
Meals
With prior notice our guests can choose from a variety of options, anything from early morning
coffee or tea in bed, to breakfast in bed, bush breakfasts, bush dinners cooked over a fire.
During summer breakfast and/or lunches are popular poolside on the wooden deck with its
magnificent views.
Vat
VAT is currently 14% and included in the price of most goods and services. Foreign tourists
qualify for a VAT refund on items purchased and taken out of the country upon departure. No VAT
refund may be claimed on goods consumed or services rendered.
Transfers
Transfers by road or air can be organized to and from Karin's Camp, but are not included in the
tariff.
Credit Cards
American Express, Diners Card, MasterCard and Visa Cards are gladly excepted at Karin's Camp.
Cheque Payments
Cheques are not accepted at Karin's Camp.
Climate
The climate over most of Southern Africa is temperate. The Northern Province where Karin's Camp
is situated is an area of low average rainfall. Heavy thunderstorms of short duration in the
late afternoon and evening may be experienced during the summer months (October - March).
Health & Medical Services
Karin's Camp is situated in a malaria free area. We have staff with First Aid training for
minor incidents, in case of emergencies we are connected to a National Helicopter Medic-rescue
Service. Medical services are of an exceptionally high standard in South Africa. It is
advisable that all guests ensure that they have good Travel Insurance, including Medical
Insurance, to cover all possible eventualities while travelling abroad.
Catering Requirements
Please inform the camp management of any special dietary requirements, special occasions,
anniversaries or birthdays that would require adjustments to the menu. Prior notice would be
preferable due to the relative isolation of Karin's Camp.
Drinking Water
All water in the camp is guaranteed perfectly safe for drinking. The water source at Karin's
Camp is from a spring in the reserve of a quality that could be bottled commercially.
Housekeeping
Immaculate standards with linen changed daily. All linen, blankets and towels are made from
100% natural fibers, and our laundry uses only Ecologically sound products. A same day
complementary laundry service is available to our clients.
Swimming Pool
Karin's Camp has a very beautiful pool set amongst a stunning rock formation, the large sundeck
overlooks a water hole were guests can game watch while relaxing around the pool.
Sauna & Jacuzzi
For those guests visiting Karin's Camp in the winter months there is a sauna and large Jacuzzi
with a 180-degree panoramic view.
Power Supply
220v A.C. current is available 24 hours a day.
Cellular Phone
Cellular phone reception is available on the Vodacom and MTN networks and for those guests with
GSM facility.
Library
Karin's Camp has a modest collection of books covering a range of local topics. Ranging from
ecological, political, anthropological through to general conservation.
Dress Code
Dress code is safari casual but a sweater may be required at anytime, whilst during the winter
months (May to September) warm clothes including a windbreaker (anorak) are essential.
What to Take
- Comfortable walking shoes, sun hats, sunglasses, sunscreen/block.
- Cameras and binoculars.
- Summer: lightweight clothing, swimming costumes, warmer clothing for game drives.
- Winter: light clothing for day time, swimming costume for the warmer spells that occur
during the winter season, very warm insulated jackets for game drives.
Directions - From Johannesburg International Airport to Karin's Camp
Take the R21 in the direction north - direction N1 north Pretoria/Polokwane,
Exit the N1 at the Kranskop Tollgate direction Nylstroom (R5.00 in coins
necessary) Proceed through Nylstroom on to Vaalwater. At Vaalwater turn
left at the 4 way stop in the direction Melkrivier. Proceed 22km turn right
onto the Sterkstroom road - sand road. Proceed 9.5km at T-junction turn
left. Go 4.5km turn left at T-junction. Entrance is on the right 3.2km
from here, look for white tree on the right hand side.
